Updates to empty lead source

Hey Guys,

I've inherited a marketo instance where lead source wasn't being tagged through all of the forms, so I have leads that are tagged correctly, then a whole bunch that are empty. So if I run a Leads by Source report to see where our leads are coming from, it's pretty skewed.

My question is, what would be the best way to update this lead source, and what criteria would you suggest I use to decide which value to update it with. I could just update them all as web or web direct to draw a line and just run from there but I'd rather not do it that way and be more meaningful with the data.

Any ideas or suggestions you have would be great

I would build smart lists filtering on the Marketo field "orriginal refferer" and then run flow actions to update the field lead source. Make sure you first block field updates to the field lead source so you do not over-write data. also on your smart lists filter on lead source is empty...

some good buckets to put people in are:
    • Web: When someone comes directly to the website without a search or through an ad
    • Online-NS: Someone does a search in a search engine and clicks through to our website organically (Details should be NS-Goolge.com, NS-Yahoo.com, etc)
    • Online-PPC: When someone clicks a pay per click ad and fills out the form
    • Examples of other sources that do not necessarily come in from a form:
      • Event
      • Other/Legacy
      • Outbound-SDR
      • Outbound-CSR
      • Partner
