Filter out telecom companies from anonymous web page activity report

I'm working on building a web page activity report in Marketo to provide my sales team with a list of anonymous companies visiting our website for prospecting (on a weekly basis).

In the report, I've chosen to "show anonymous visitors from ISPs" as well as, under smart list, "is anonymous = True". I've also set up date of activity for "last 7 days".

When I look at the results, I'm noticing most of these names are the telecom companies providing the internet as opposed to the actual companies.

Do you have any experience creating a similar kind of report? Is there a way to easily filter out these telecom companies?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
-Bruno.

Re: Filter out telecom companies from anonymous web page activity report

Hey Bruno!

Also make sure in the "Setup" tab to mark "Anonymous visitors from ISPs" as hidden, which should help a bit although still lots of ISPs slip through.

My experience with this report is similar -- it is interesting but has limited use unless all your prospects are from big companies that have IPs registered to the company name.

Although apparently we have over 2,200 anonymous leads from Fibernetics Corporation! 😉

If you discover another tool that does this much better let me know, I'd be interested.

Here is a list of ISPs in the US - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Internet_service_providers_of_the_United_States

You could try: Inferred company does not contain....

Thank you Debbie! That plus removing some obvious keywords like "university" or "communications" really helped but still, not the cleanest list. I'm thinking we might be better off looking at some other tools that focus on this.

Re: Filter out telecom companies from anonymous web page activity report

Thank you Justin! That's exactly what I'm looking for- to get some validation from other Marketo users on how helpful they find this report to be.

We're looking into other possible tools. I'll let you know if we find anything interesting.

@Bruno in addition to the input from others, remember that an employee surfing in the field or in transit may well be hitting your site on behalf of his/her company, but by definition you will only see their mobile network. In the age of mobile, getting real precision in such a report is basically impossible for this reason alone.

@Adam what is the significance of excluding those countries?

Hi Sanford,

Our company in particular targets enterprise-level clients in the U.S. For our particular instance these leads don't fit with our business model.

Re: Filter out telecom companies from anonymous web page activity report

OK... assumed so but it seemed to not mesh with @Bruno's request because he didn't mention countries at all!

While I agree you'll get true positives if someone comes from an enterprise with their own AS, you can't assume you're counting all the visits on behalf that enterprise, since direct mobile (non-VPN) makes up a large portion of enterprise traffic.  70% of our traffic is from known leads from large enterprises and we can see them coming in from all over the place!
