Correlation between Marketo Program Status "Success" and SFDC Campaign Member "Responded"

Hello, I am trying to get more clarity on the relationship between Marketo Program Status and synced SFDC Campaign Member "Responded" value.

For our Tradeshow channel type, we currently have set the Marketo program status of "Engaged" as the definition of program Success.

Question #1:
If we have Marketo Trade Show Program synced to a Salesforce campaign, when you run a flow step to change program status to "engaged", does that action check the Salesforce campaign value of "responded" to True?

It sure appears that way, but Marketo support is saying otherwise. Just wanted to get 100% clarity.

Question #2:
If we were to edit the Marketo Tradeshow channel tag, and add the program status "Visited Booth" as another critieria for Program Success,
a) would that apply a program success to everyone who is currently a member of Tradeshow program AND has a program status of "visited booth"?
b) would that action of adding "visited booth" as a success to the Marketo tradeshow tag update the Salesforce campaign member status of every member of a corresponding (and synced) Salesforce campaign to "responded"?

Thanks in advance for any input. (And Josh Hill and Pamela B, thank you for your valuable input on related question in a separate post).

Re: Correlation between Marketo Program Status "Success" and SFDC Campaign Member "Responded"

HI Ari-
I've always changed my SFDC campaign separately as part of a flow step. To my knowledge Marketo doesn't automatically change the SFDC campaign status. Also, you can customize the SFDC statuses to match whatever your campaign is. Hope that helps!

Re: Correlation between Marketo Program Status "Success" and SFDC Campaign Member "Responded"

Hey Ari!

#1: Success and Responded are independent values in different systems. You can set Program Statuses as Success in Marketo and you can set Campaign Statuses as Responded in SFDC. When a Marketo Program is Sync'd with a SFDC Campaign, all Marketo does is push and pull the statuses between the systems. Once the status is updated, Marketo determines if that status is a success and SFDC decides if that status is Responded.
To summarize, Marketo does not push or pull "Success". It just push and pulls statuses and then determines if that status is set as a success in Marketo.

#2: a) I just did some testing and it looks like the answer is no. To update everyone to Success after you make the change, you can set up a Smart Campaign using the "Change Program Success" flow step to update the success to True. However, all leads that are added to the new success status after you make the change will be marked as success.
b) As outlined in my response to #1, no. This status will also need to set set to "Responded" in SFDC.

Re: Correlation between Marketo Program Status "Success" and SFDC Campaign Member "Responded"

Thanks for the input Alisa and Will.

I just did some testing to try and verify what you're saying. While I get that Success and Responded are independent values, when you connect a program to a SFDC campaign, I'm now more confident that Success IS actually driving the Responded fied.

1. To verify, I created in Marketo a brand new Channel type and just created 4 sample status values, and set them all as Success.

2. I then created a test program using this new channel type:

(screenshot cutoff the remaining program statuses)

3. I then enabled the Marketo Salesforce campaign sync for that program. When I go over to Salesforce a few minutes later and look at the campaign created, here's what showed up as the "Responded" values.

Based on this, wouldn't you say that when you have a program synced to a campaign, whatever program statuses you have specified for Success will determine what the Responded values are?

I'd really appreciate a yay or neah on whether or not this is correct as it's going to affect how we structure our reporting.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Correlation between Marketo Program Status "Success" and SFDC Campaign Member "Responded"

Ari, you are correct. The default is that marketo's Success Status will be dropped into SFDC Campaign as Responded=TRUE. This is documented.

As Will notes, in theory, you can go into SFDC and modify the Responded state for each Status, making some TRUE and some FALSE. I think that will still let Marketo do its automation, but I suspect it could just turn Responded on TRUE again if it sees that.

Re: Correlation between Marketo Program Status "Success" and SFDC Campaign Member "Responded"

Hey Ari,
If you set Marketo to create a new campaign in SFDC to sync with, Marketo will match up Success steps with Responded steps.

However, if you sync a Marketo program with an existing SFDC campaign, it will not alter the Statuses.
