Is it possible to "hide" leads that are in Salesforce from Marketo?

We have a vast amount of "dead" leads in SFDC which we want to keep in there but remove from Marketo. We have already synced the two systems, is it possible to essentially hide these leads from Marketo?

I agree with Grant on 1:1 syncing. However, there are also valid reasons to keep some records out of Marketo, for example when a lot of them have no email address. In addition to using SFDC Sharing rules (only possible with SFDC Enterprise Edition and with a private SFDC sharing model), you can also use a Custom Sync filter. Create a check box field "Sync to Marketo" and contact Marketo Technical Support to enable that as a filter. Then when you check the box, it will sync.

Yes - adjust SFDC permissions to hide them from your Marketo "integration user" in Salesforce.com. If Marketo can't see those records when it logs in to your SFDC, it won't automatically upload them to Marketo.

The SFDC permisisons might be more or less difficult to adjust depending on whether you have a "Public" or "Private" setting on leads.

Would that adjustment hide all SFDC leads from Marketo?  I am assuming lauren would want to still synch active leads.  I have always been curious if there would be a way to hide specific leads from Marketo.  Also, could hiding leads from Marketo 'integration user' potentially start to create duplicates since an activity on a hidden lead in Marketo wouldnt be able to synch so Marketo would create a new record?

You can create precise permissions settings for users in SFDC, and hide pretty much whatever you want/don't want.

And yes, whenever you have leads in one of the systems and not the other, you're inviting all kinds of headaches, beginning with duplicate leads.

In my opionion the cost of having a one-to-one sync (ie, everything in SFDC is in Marketo, and vice versa) is much smaller than the cost of having to deal with two different databases.

Think about having a custom field check box for leads and contact, in combination with your specific sync details.
This way you can check to see if lead/contact checkbox if true, sync/or not sync.

Jep - there are so many cool things that Marketo Technical Support can do - I wish there was more transparency around this. Sometimes, we don't even know that "support could do that" is an option.

I understand that you don't want to overwhelm support with custom solutions, but having a list of things that could be done would be so helpful! I'm going to start my own list right now!

So, I know our SFDC admin can accomplish tons of very cool custom solutions using the admin tools that SFDC provides.  Does Marketo not provide the same functionality and empowerment to its admins?

Re: Is it possible to "hide" leads that are in Salesforce from Marketo?

we had marketo create a "hide from marketo" synch rule based on a check box field in SFDC. i then ran reports in SFDC to get to people i wanted to delete and hide from marketo. I then changed that field from empty to True for about 10000 records (using Data Loader). i then let that sync to marketo. then i went into marketo and deleted everyone that that field was true- but did not delete from sfdc.

the synch rule basically made it that if people are checked true in SFDC to hide from marketo they wouldn't sync anymore.

support set it up for me pretty quickly

Re: Is it possible to "hide" leads that are in Salesforce from Marketo?

Why does support need to help with this?  Is this not something we can manage ourselves (between the Marketo and SFDC admin), or is there something I am overlooking that requires Marketo support intervention?  I ask because I am about to go through this process myself, but want to know why this path was taken before moving forward.

Thanks!
