New Lead from Contact - Campaign Not Carrying Over

I realize this might be a bit "non-standard" but here it goes... We often send emails to SFDC Leads and Contacts together. For these emails, we have a Clicked Listener campaign and the Flow Steps include creating a new Lead in SFDC (even if they were already a Contact record), assigning the Lead to a queue and adding the Lead to a SFDC campaign.

This works as expected unless the clicker was a Contact already in SFDC; in that case, a new Lead is created and assigned to the correct queue, but they are NOT being added to the SFDC campaign. Any ideas on why that step isn't working?

Once you create the duplicate, Marketo may be getting confused about which record you want to perform the add to campaign action on. 

Are you finding that the contact is being added to the campaign instead of the lead or just that no add to campaign action is being executed? 

Can you find any errors in the activity history of either record?

I just realized that it's probably the order of my Flow Steps that are causing the problem. Let me adjust and I'll come back if that's not it. Thanks, Justin!

Well, so much for that theory. In my last test, I reordered the Clicked Campaign flow steps and that didn't make a difference.

My flow steps are:
  1. Change Program Status
  2. Sync Lead to SFDC
  3. Add to SFDC Campaign
  4. Change Score
In the activity log, I see #1 happens, #2 is skipped, #3-4 happen, and at the very end I see an activity "Sync Lead Updates to SFDC."

The new Lead is getting created and added to the Queue, but the CONTACT is being added to the SFDC Campaign.

Yep, so I think the issue here is that Marketo is being confused when you create a duplicate. 

I suspect what's happening is that now you have two records (a lead and a contact) with the same email address, and Marketo is uncertain which record you want to apply the "Add to SFDC Campaign" action to, and it uses the older record (the contact). 

There's no real way around this I'm aware of since Marketo is set up to prevent duplicates and doesn't have an easy way to manage them.
