Segmentation on landing page in first mail

I just started working with Marketo.

Today we would like to send a first mail to our contacts. ( they were imported from another system )

None of them have the Marketo cookie, since this will be their first visit.

My mail is segmented based on language, when I perform tests, that segmentation seems to work.

The mail has a CTA with a link to a landing page. This CTA is also segmented because of the language.

Question:

1) Should I add my segment in the URL so that the Landing Page will display in the proper language (coming from the mail)? Or are the contacts parameters passed towards the landing page from the mail, and segmentation will be done by the platform and not by the url parameters?

2) I have used other segments in my landing page ( images based on industry ). When I click the CTA in the mail towards the landing page the second segmentation is not working.

What is wrong here?

Re: Segmentation on landing page in first mail

Hi Franky,

You should not need to add any additional criteria to your email links.

The links in the Marketo emails will generally insert a cookie pixel into the browser when the person clicks on the link. This should enable the segmentation on your landing page as Marketo will then register this information and display the right content.

1. Confirm if the record you are testing falls into the correct segments both for language and industry.

2. Test with an actual email send to your test record - and not a sample test email. Sample test do not register the cookie information into the browser only actual email sends. To do a actual email send to your test record(email), you can go to the record in the database, highlight the record and on the top you will see "lead actions", then select marketing->send email->type in the name of your email.

Hope this helps.

Re: Segmentation on landing page in first mail

The links in the Marketo emails will generally insert a cookie pixel into the browser when the person clicks on the link.

FYI:

  1. Clicking a tracked Marketo link does not set a cookie. There's no cookie set by the click tracking (branding) server.
  2. The cookie is only set in a given session after a Munchkin-enabled page is loaded into the browser. A cookie is neither required nor included in the initial HTTP request. In fact, the mkt_tok query parameter is responsible for associating the request with the lead's segment. Subsequent pageviews in the same browser will include the cookie, if the browser doesn't have cookies and/or tracking disabled, but the segmented content doesn't depend on cookies even being allowed by the end user.
