List Imports into Marketo, to be synced into SFDC

I recently tried importing a list of new leads into Marketo.  Note, our SFDC sync with Marketo was working just fine at the time. When I imported this list into Marketo, the leads did not sync over into SFDC.  The columns in the list were matched with the fields correctly.  I reched out to my consultant at the time and she told me that every time I import a list into Marketo, I need to create a program for those new leads.  I then need to sync that program to a SFDC campaign. This does not seem correct to me. Just because we import new leads, does not mean we want to run a call campaign or email campaign on them. I don't believe I was given the correct information here.

Can someone please tell me how I can make sure that when I import a list of new leads into Marketo, that they sync over into SFDC. (without having to create a Marketo program and sync to a SFDC campaign).

You should have one global Campaign that syncs to SFDc for each new lead in the database, if that is the desired behavior.

Hi Jenny,

Marketo does not automatically synchronize all new leads to SFDC by default. You either need to add these Leads to a program or you need to explicitly trigger the first sync.

if you have imported the leads in a list, just create a smart campaign with the following setup:

  • filters:
    • Member of list IN your list
    • SFDC Type [person] IS EMPTY
  • flow step:
    • sync to SFDC

You also could make it a trigger (with the added to list trigger) for the next time you have to do it.

Re: List Imports into Marketo, to be synced into SFDC

Great, thanks so much.  I'll be able to test and make sure that I do this correctly at the end of the week with a new list import. Also, will deleting a list, after it's already been synced with SFDC, remove those records from the CRM and/or Marketo? I ffel like it's a silly question but I am extremely new to Marketo and always want to make sure before deleting items.

Re: List Imports into Marketo, to be synced into SFDC

Hi Jenny,

No, deleting the list will not delete the leads. It will only delete the list If you are keeping the leads, you should also, IMHO, keep the list. It will serve as a historical point in the future to remember which leads were imported.

To delete the leads in the list, you will have to select all the leads in the list and click the "delete lead" button, then answer the question about deleting the leads from SFDC as well. If you delete the leads, you should also pay attention to the fact that some of these leads may wel have existed in Marketo Prior to the import (Marketo deduplicates on import). To know which leads where really created during that import, use a "lead was created" filter with a "List" constraint.
