Merging Duplicates After Initial SFDC and Marketo Sync

We are getting ready to sync SFDC and Marketo.  We have records that exist in both systems.

It is our understanding that after initial sync, these leads will be duplicated in Marketo.

My questions are:

1. Is there a way to prevent this?

2. If not, how did you manage the merging in Marketo?

Thank you.

Hi again Christine,

That's a much easier situation Once the sync is done, you have few of these records, you will be able to merge them in Marketo easily.

For large volumes, Marketo offers, for a fee, the Easy Merge service, a one shot merge service, that can exactly do what you want.

Re: Merging Duplicates After Initial SFDC and Marketo Sync

Hi Christine,

The only way to prevent it is to deduplicate before the sync. After the sync, the good news is that if you merge 2 leads or 2 contacts in SFDC, they will merge in Marketo.

Deduplicating from Marketo does not work as well as the doc says. You can easily convert leads, provided that the Marketo users have the proper rights. But merging contacts is harder, because this supposes that they are attached to the same account in SFDC, which you hardly control in Marketo. And merging a lead with a contact from Marketo in fact does not work, as it's impossible to control the lead conversion process with enough precision to make sure the converted lead end in the same account as the contact.

So this leaves you with the need to do the deduplication in SFDC. Some tools can help you, such as Demandtools or RingLead will do a good job helping you cleansing all this.

Re: Merging Duplicates After Initial SFDC and Marketo Sync

Hi Greg -

When I say that we have records that exist in both, I mean the same record with the same email lives independently in both Marketo and SFDC.  We know that upon initial sync, this record (that already exist in Marketo) will be duplicated with a SFDC ID.  We are trying to prevent this action and have that SFDC ID populate to the original record in Marketo and not create a new one.

Thank you,

Christine
