Tracking PDF clicks on Marketo landing page

Tracking PDF clicks on Marketo landing page

At the moment, a PDF is considered a link when used in the 'clicks link in an email' trigger, however it comes up with an error when trying to use the 'clicks link on a webpage' trigger.

This seems a little silly to me and definitely something Marketo should look into.

I have the same situation: we created 6 partner pages that contain 15 links to content each (the url link to pdf's which were uploaded onto Marketo as well as urls to our product pages). We want to track the link performance on these pages - ideally with one report that tracks all the different links, but from researching within the community I understand that this is not possible (unfortunately). I could instead run smart campaigns "clicked link on webpage" and defining the webpage. But here we have a real issue: Marketo simply doesn't seem to find the url selected in "Link name is" nor "Link name contains". There is always an error message in the report that the link could not be found.

How can this be resolved? How to track the performance of the 15 links per landing page? How to measure the success of landing pages if there is no possibility to track link traffic?

Paula, it's not really accurate to say that PDFs do not create Clicks Link on Web Page activities, nor is it true that those clicks can't be used in triggers (e.g. AFAIK this Community Idea is based on faulty findings).

It's true that there are situations* in which not all PDF clicks from the same page view are logged -- though the first click will still be, and the bug can be worked around quite easily. In general you will see PDF click activities in the lead's Activity Log as a matter of course.

What is perhaps happening in your case is you aren't looking for the right link.  Look in the lead's ActLog and see what Munchkin is logging for the hit.  This may not be what you expect, because it is drawn from the href on the A tag.

If you post one of your URLs I can tell you what/how it's being logged.

* Dan TakehiroMarkGrégJoshEdwardJustin Norris you guys know the bug I'm referring to or nah?

Hi Sanford,

Yes, I have observed the fact that the clicks on PDF links are not all tracked properly. But it do not know the origin of it.

Sanford, thanks for getting back.

A few things to highlight the situation: there is no Munchkin code on the landing pages - I will make sure to add it in the future.

The landing pages have no form, so it's literally just for customers to visit the landing page and from there get guided to different pages (our website; pdf's, .xlsx files we uploaded into Mkt).

Thanks for offering to look into a url. Maybe it's easier to have you look at the landing page that includes all the links: http://pages.plantronics.com/also.html

I think I need to set up a smart list Clicks link on webpage for each link to get to know the performance of it. Unfortunately, non of the links get recognized and the error message shows up.

Looking forward to your input!

Without Munchkin, by definition there can be no link click activities.  Munchkin is Marketo's web activity tracker.

BUT... it is not correct that there is no Munchkin code on the page you posted.  It is running Munchkin (Marketo-hosted LPs do by default).

I think I need to set up a smart list Clicks link on webpage for each link to get to know the performance of it. Unfortunately, non of the links get recognized and the error message shows up.

First, your page does suffer from the bug I mentioned above where only the first downloadable link is logged.  I will tell you how to fix that later.

But for now, let's concentrate on the link Musterkoffer.  When I click this link, a Munchkin click is certainly logged.  Create a a Clicks Link on Web Page trigger with Link Name contains

     pages.plantronics.com/rs/107-MXT-108/images/Plantronics Musterkoffer 12_2015.pdf

There's no reason this should give an error.  It doesn't for me (I created a link to your same PDF).  Of course the link is broken on your site but that's a separate problem.  The link click will be logged regardless of the outcome.

Firstly thanks for helping me sort this problem and for highlighting that the munchkin code is generated automatically when creating an LP.

I have now created smart lists for all links of this LP - none of the smart lists found any leads. I have then created smart lists of all links of the LP that performed best - again no leads were found. I also created a smart list "clicked ANY lead on webpage" - only 3 leads were found for both LP's, which indicates that at least 3 clicks were generated so at least one of the smart lists with concrete url would need to show results, which it doesn't. Why is this?

Do you have any idea how such a landing page link performance could be tracked differently in Marketo? This seems not trustfull.

It's trustworthy.  I just have a feeling you're not building your SLs right.

Are you typing the exact path to the Musterkoffer pdf as I provided?  Because I literally linked to your Musterkoffer PDF from an LP in one of my Marketo instances and it was logged fine (I was able to create a Smart Campaign triggering on the Clicks Link activity).

You also should have target="_blank" for all those PDF downloads.

Hi Sanford,

You mentioned that you would tell us about a fix for logging all PDF clicks from the same page view. I'm definitely interested in hearing more. I've not been able to find very many references and no other solutions to the problem.

Thanks,

Jason

I'll DM you some code to get around this bug in Munchkin.

Hi Sanford,

Could you please share the code with me as well? We are tracking some ungated content as part of our scoring program and this would be a huge help.

Thank you,

D.
